Chemical Products

At Stirling Lubricants Inc, we’re not just about providing our customers with top-quality oils and lubricants, but also chemical products. From top-to-bottom, we strive to help our customers nationwide find the right product, deliver it on time, and to answer any questions they may have. As a leading supplier of Xylene, Acetone, and Isopropyl Alcohol, you can count on us.

Xylene

How is Xylene Produced?

Xylene is both naturally occurring and manmade.  It can be refined from crude oil in a process known as alkylation.  It can also be produced from coal carbonisation as an extract from the benzole gas created by coke ovens.

Storage and Distribution of Xylene

A chemical wholesaler would have a bulk petrochemical storage facility to regulate this product.  Storage is normally in a cool, dry and well ventilated facility away from oxidising agents.  Xylene should be kept out of direct sunlight, heat and open flames.  Solvents such as xylene should be stored in drummed containers such as isotanks made of stainless steel, aluminium or carbon steel.

A bulk solvent exporter would normally distribute this chemical in bulk vessels or tank trucks.  For transportation purposes, xylene is classed as a flammable liquid with a fire hazard rating of 3.  A full bulk chemical distributor would export xylene throughout regions such as the UK, Europe, Africa and America.  This product is a packing group 3.

What is Xylene used for?

The majority of mixed xylene isomers are used for blending into petrol and gasoline.  It is also a key solvent in the printing, rubber, leather and pesticides industries.  It can also be used as a cleaning agent for steel, silicon and as a thinner for paint, varnishes, adhesives and inks.  Other applications of Xylene include making certain types of plastic, as an inhalant drug and the manufacture of dyes, fibres, perfumes, and films.  The main end user markets are the petrochemical, printing, rubber, leather, cleaning, plastics and pesticides industries.

Isopropyl Alcohol

Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) CAS No. 67-63-0 also known as Isopropanol or 2-Propanol is a clear, colorless, volatile material with a mild odor and a relatively low toxicity compared to alternate solvents. As a chemical compound with the common formula C3H8O, its characteristics allow its use for a variety of applications. IPA is miscible in water, alcohol, and most organic solvents. It will dissolve substances such as cellulose; natural resins; oils and gums; alkaloids.

Stirling Lubricants is an IPA distributors in the United States. We sell  industrial grade IPA made from both acetone and propylene. We offer our customers security of supply at competitive costs even in times of high demand.

How is IPA Made?

Isopropyl Alcohol is made in various ways.

The indirect hydration process is based on a two-step reaction of propylene and sulfuric acid. The acid-catalyzed direct hydration of propylene has three basic processes of commercial operation:

Vapor-phase hydration over a fixed-bed catalyst of supported phosphoric acid or silica-supported tungsten oxide with zinc oxide promoter
Mixed vapor-liquid-phase hydration at low temperature and high pressure using a strongly acid cation exchange catalyst
Liquid-phase hydration at high temperature and high pressure in the presence of a soluble tungsten catalyst
Other processes for the manufacturing of isopropyl alcohol include:

Liquid phase oxidation of propane
By the reductive condensation of acetone
Fermentation

Acetone

What is acetone?

Acetone, also known as propanone (or 2-propanone), is an organic compound primarily used as an industrial solvent. Acetone serves as an active ingredient in common household and industrial products such as nail polish removers and paint thinners.

A colorless, odorless and flammable liquid, acetone is derived from propylene via the cumene process. The United States is the leading global acetone manufacturer, producing approximately 1.56 million tons per year.
